I feel like I've been waiting forever to show this cover off. I really haven't, but I've just been so impatient to share it! It's beautiful - everything I didn't know I wanted!

THROUGH HER EYES is being released on May 8th (ahhh!!!!) and I need to get prepping for release-day publicity, so I'll leave you with the blurb!

Six years ago, Keira nearly died at the hands of a serial killer. The experience left her with more than just physical scars. She was psychically linked to the killer, a helpless witness to all his crimes. Now the man known as the Shoreditch Slasher has killed again, and Keira is dragged right back into his path. Detective Dom Abbott believes Keira's link to the killer will help the police finally catch him, even if it means putting the woman he loves in danger. With Dom to protect her, Keira is willing to risk almost anything...But where will her strange gift lead her?

Re-work, Re-cycle, Re-invent

Today I've been going through the second round of edits for THROUGH HER EYES. The first round I did last week, but my wise editor suggested I could make the story stronger with a few tweaks. So today I tweaked. THROUGH HER EYES is something of a upcycling project for me. I started writing it a few years ago (2011, I believe), and I did finish a much shorter version of it then. The characters were completely different and the ending was...gloomy, to say the least. Then last year, I was going through my old laptop before trashing it, and I rescued a few projects. This was one of them.

After re-reading it, I fell in love with the concept and some of the themes (serial killers! Weird paranormal stuff!), but knew that the story as it was (downbeat ending, low word-count, rough-round-the-edges writing) wasn't going to cut it. I started re-writing. I changed a couple of really big things and polished the prose, then stalled about 1000 words from the end. For some reason, I just couldn't make it work. I couldn't get my head in the right place for a romance, which is what this story needed to be. So I abandoned it again.

And then, earlier this year, I went back. Knowing there was really only one scene to fix before the story met my expectations, I waded in and beat that sucker into submission. And then I submitted it. And it was accepted. Yay! Only five years in the making.

Going through the edits over the past few days, I'm really glad I A) decided to finish THROUGH HER EYES and B) decided to make the changes I have. The story in it's original incarnation now feels very shallow and a pretty poor representation of the kind of writing I love to do. I'm not sure yet whether the second round of edits will be the last, but either way we're getting closer to THROUGH HER EYES being out in the world, and it's going to be great to see the finished product and know that ripping it apart and putting it back together was the right choice.

Amber's Reading Pile - Nostalgia Trip

4/21/2015

So I've been beavering away on my current WIP (Tanner's War, which is going pretty well, if I do say so myself), and I'm eagerly awaiting the okay to show you the cover for THROUGH HER EYES (because it's gorgeous), and in between those things I've been reading a lot. Here's the great thing about the Kindle: I'm finding books that I read in paperback as a kid that are no longer available in paperback. They're out of print or not for sale in the UK. Or they are available, but I just don't have the physical room for more books in my house. But they are available as ebooks, and this has kicked off a big nostalgia trip for me. The second I found out that all the Song of the Lioness books are available for the Kindle, I snatched them all up and re-read them as fast as I could.

Tamora Pierce's Immortals Quartet was some of the first high fantasy I read, back when I was fourteen or so, and it really shaped the kind of writing I did for the next few years. I still have my paperbacks of that series - I adore it and re-read all four once a year pretty religiously. I discovered the Alanna books after the Immortals, and loved them too. Alanna is such a great heroine - one who takes on a male-dominated world and proves successful, but not simply by acting like a man. One of the important parts of this series is that Alanna embraces her womanhood, too, and realises the strength that can give her. I find this a great contrast to some urban fantasy heroines, who succeed in their male-dominated worlds by eschewing their feminine sides. Great character, great series, and I loved re-visiting it. I really hope the Immortals books will come to the Kindle as well, because I'd love e-copies of that too.

After Alanna, I went hunting Amazon to see what other childhood favourites I could find, and was really excited to find this book available for the Kindle:

Sea Dragon Heir is a stunning, compelling gothic-laced high fantasy - family curses, forbidden love, dragons...What more could you ask for? This was my first Storm Constantine book and I cannot tell you how many times I read and re-read it as a teenager. Her writing is captivating and the story has so many motifs that I love. Re-reading it these past few days, I felt spellbound all over again. I have not fallen out of love with this book over the years, and I really just wanted to go right back to the start and read it again when I finished it this morning.

It looks like the other parts of the trilogy are also out for the Kindle, as well as some of her older works, so I'm looking forward to discovering more of her writing. I had read the other two books, but didn't love them quite as much as Sea Dragon Heir, so it's going to be interesting to revisit them and see if they make more of an impact now I'm older...

So this is my argument every time someone says they don't like ebooks and only want to read "real books" - without ebooks, I'd never get to read some of the stories that I adored when I was younger. And how sad would that be?

Two sexy elves, one innocent human woman, and a pair of thigh-high boots.

Hanna Bregot is struggling to make a go of her ailing father’s cobbler shop, but the residents of her town regard a woman shoemaker as an oddity. At the end of the day, she can’t even summon the energy to repair her tattered slippers, let alone earn enough to feed herself or her cat.

Elf companions Lear and Garrin like to mingle among humans, but always in disguise. When they notice a poor cobbler crying over her shoes one evening, they immediately decide to intervene and give her a gift in the hopes of lifting her spirits.

What starts out as simple kindness soon morphs into a sensual game the three want to play forever. But when the Queen of the Elves discovers their love, it becomes a matter of magic versus mundane in a life or death decision.

Music to Make Stories To

4/5/2015

I had plans this Easter weekend to work on a short story I started a few weeks ago. I've got about 1k down, I really love the idea and the characters, and I've totally flaked out on writing anything on it. Instead I've been working on a short story for a new Evernight anthology, tentatively titled Exiled Alpha. I'm 6k in and I regret nothing. I LOVE werewolves, so any excuse to write a shifter story and I'm there.

And of course, I need a soundtrack. I have soundtracks for pretty much all my writing needs - from music for specific characters, to playlists inspired by folklore, to general "mood" playlists. For this project, I pulled out the Dark Romance Mood playlist. It's a mix of artists and songs I love, but they all carry the general theme of "somewhere between 'fuck you' and 'I want to fuck you'." A few highlights, you ask? Certainly!

I'm really hoping I can have the first draft of this story finished up by next weekend. I'm planning to spend April working on Amber Morgan projects, particularly since THROUGH HER EYES should be out later this month, and it definitely start the month off right if I finished Exiled Alpha and had it ready for submission! Might need more music...

EXCERPT:

She spins from my arms and drops her chemise to her ankles. Turning her head, long raven locks drape her bare shoulder as she glances back at me. I stare at her naked flesh. Last night in the tunnel darkness shrouded us. Now, in the bright morning light, I see her for the first time.

Her gorgeous hair stops right before her rounded hips. She clings to the oak bed post and eases herself around. The pink of her breasts stare back at me. I swallow hard over the lump wedged at the back of my throat, blocking my words. My gaze traverses the length of her, stopping on the beautiful patch of hair between her legs. All the air in my lungs lunges out of me in a gasp.

“Why are you still clothed?” She tilts her head as a coy smile weaves over her lips.

“Because I cannot take my eyes off of you. Words fail me. They would do no good anyway. There are none to describe you, Snow. Gorgeous. Stunning. Beautiful. They pale in comparison to how my eyes see you. How my heart feels for you. But perhaps with actions, I can show you.” I rush her and sweep her into my arms, squashing her breasts against me.

Crushing my lips over hers, I sweep her mouth, telling her things with my tongue that I cannot say. Soft moans fill our kiss, and my feisty Snow works hard to get me out of my clothes. Hating to unlock our lips, I step back to undo the last of my trousers.

“I finally get to see all of you, too.” She stalks around me like a tiger eyeing its prey. “I like this part best.” She drags a finger the length of my cock, which stands at attention waiting to pleasure her. “But, I also like this part.” Her hands palm the width of my torso. I fight back a smile itching to curl over my lips at her little game. “I really like these.” Gripping my hands, she pulls my fingertips to her lips and kisses each one. “They do so many good things to me.” She makes one final walk around me. “But I like this part most of all.” Pressing her lips to my chest, she kisses my heart. It fills with sadness and love at the same time.

The lump returns to my throat as I fight back choking emotions attacking my head and heart.

“What about my lips?” I ask, forcing a smile over the ache in my heart.

“They are not part of you. They are part of me. They breathe life into me. They feed me words that can never be spoken.” She runs her hand up my chest before cupping my cheek. “They unlock true love's kiss.”

I ease her backward onto the bed and hover over her body. Leaning forward, I brush my mouth against hers. Hard nipples graze my chest, sending a lightning bolt of arousal to my cock resting against her hips.

“These lips can do so much more.” I look deep into her eyes that swallow me whole.

“How so?” she whispers.

“Like this,” I say, before kissing my way down her body. Spreading her stunning thighs apart, I ease my face between them.

“Darien?” she cries out. “What are you doing?”

“Speaking to you in another language.” I pry open her lower lips with my fingers and swipe the length of her pussy with my tongue.
