Amber's Reading Pile - Nostalgia Trip

So I've been beavering away on my current WIP (Tanner's War, which is going pretty well, if I do say so myself), and I'm eagerly awaiting the okay to show you the cover for THROUGH HER EYES (because it's gorgeous), and in between those things I've been reading a lot. Here's the great thing about the Kindle: I'm finding books that I read in paperback as a kid that are no longer available in paperback. They're out of print or not for sale in the UK. Or they are available, but I just don't have the physical room for more books in my house. But they are available as ebooks, and this has kicked off a big nostalgia trip for me. The second I found out that all the Song of the Lioness books are available for the Kindle, I snatched them all up and re-read them as fast as I could.

Tamora Pierce's Immortals Quartet was some of the first high fantasy I read, back when I was fourteen or so, and it really shaped the kind of writing I did for the next few years. I still have my paperbacks of that series - I adore it and re-read all four once a year pretty religiously. I discovered the Alanna books after the Immortals, and loved them too. Alanna is such a great heroine - one who takes on a male-dominated world and proves successful, but not simply by acting like a man. One of the important parts of this series is that Alanna embraces her womanhood, too, and realises the strength that can give her. I find this a great contrast to some urban fantasy heroines, who succeed in their male-dominated worlds by eschewing their feminine sides. Great character, great series, and I loved re-visiting it. I really hope the Immortals books will come to the Kindle as well, because I'd love e-copies of that too.

After Alanna, I went hunting Amazon to see what other childhood favourites I could find, and was really excited to find this book available for the Kindle:

Sea Dragon Heir is a stunning, compelling gothic-laced high fantasy - family curses, forbidden love, dragons...What more could you ask for? This was my first Storm Constantine book and I cannot tell you how many times I read and re-read it as a teenager. Her writing is captivating and the story has so many motifs that I love. Re-reading it these past few days, I felt spellbound all over again. I have not fallen out of love with this book over the years, and I really just wanted to go right back to the start and read it again when I finished it this morning.

It looks like the other parts of the trilogy are also out for the Kindle, as well as some of her older works, so I'm looking forward to discovering more of her writing. I had read the other two books, but didn't love them quite as much as Sea Dragon Heir, so it's going to be interesting to revisit them and see if they make more of an impact now I'm older...

So this is my argument every time someone says they don't like ebooks and only want to read "real books" - without ebooks, I'd never get to read some of the stories that I adored when I was younger. And how sad would that be?
