"Lots of people go mad in January"

1/28/2016

Not that I've gone mad. But I feel like the world might be going mad around me this month. We started the month badly when we lost our much-loved and now much-missed cat, Fergus, to heart failure at the grand old age of fifteen. Then this past weekend, my laptop died and my bank account got hacked. Honestly neither of those things are as bad as losing Fergus, but they're still pretty fucking annoying.

We might be able to resurrect the laptop - I think it's the charger that's actually dead, and there's a new one en route to me...except it's stuck at Gatwick airport, which is apparently about to be cursed by the Greek god Pan or something. So by the time it reaches me, it may be haunted. I'm over 50k into Wolf's Hunt, and was really gunning to have it finished this month, but until I get the laptop working, I'm kind of stuck. And there's always the possibility that I can't get the laptop working, which I'm trying not to think about. Luckily for me, I'm engaged to a tech wizard, and as of tonight I will have a MacBook to see me through until a formal diagnosis is made on my beloved machine.

The hacked bank account is almost sorted...The stolen money was returned yesterday, but I had to cancel my debit card and online banking, leaving me without access to my money >.< The bank won't send the new debit card to my house because of the whole fraud/security aspect of this (which sounds like bollocks to me, to be honest), so I have to go into Cambridge and collect it this weekend. Assuming it's at the bank for me to collect. Which it might not be. Meanwhile, I'm having to ask Kyle for money when I need it, which is ridiculous.

Blah. So there must be some good stuff happening right? WAKING THE LIONESS is out, obviously, and I have a definite sequel in mind for Lara, Zane, and Tate. I'll probably work on that after Wolf's Hunt is finished. And it is nearly finished. It's likely to be twice as long as TANNER'S WAR at this rate, but that seems to be a pattern for me. The first story in a series always seems to be novella-length, and then each subsequent book gets bigger. I guess the only other really good news is that January is nearly over, and February is a short month, so even if it is shit, there's less of it.

But I'm really not a pessimist by nature. I can't help being hopeful, even when I don't want to be. Whether my laptop gets fixed or not, I have a computer to work on and all my writing files can be retrieved. My stolen money is back and if my new debit card arrives on Saturday, I'm going straight to Whittards and buying the biggest tub of salted caramel hot chocolate I can find, dammit. Then I'm coming home, putting on a good, long podcast, and I'm writing until my fingers fall off. More than anything else right now, I really, really want to be writing.

Spotlight - There's Love on Location with Lucy Felthouse!

I know, I know. I've been super quiet since WAKING THE LIONESS came out. I have my reasons. I'll probably blog about them at some point. Suffice to say, January has been Quite The Month, and I'm ready for it to be over. In the mean time, let's take a look at something fun and hot...
Out Now – Love on Location by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #mm #gay #lgbt #erotica #romance #ku

When Theo Samuels heads off to film on location in the village of Stoneydale, he’s expecting drama to take place on camera, not off. But when he meets gorgeous local lad, Eddie Henderson, he struggles to ignore his attraction. A relationship between the two of them would be utterly impractical, yet they’re drawn together nonetheless. Can they overcome the seemingly endless hurdles between them? Or is their fling destined to remain as just that?

Note: Love on Location has been previously released as part of the Brit Boys: On Boys boxed set.

Theodore Albert Samuels strode through Stoneydale Hall, barely giving the opulent furnishings, the priceless art or the stunning architecture a second glance. It belonged to him, after all. It was all his, his birthright, his inheritance.

He stopped suddenly. “Damn,” he muttered under his breath, hoping none of the film crew were taking any notice of him. Looking over, it appeared they were still absorbed in figuring out lighting, props and where the actors should stand to get the best shots. Good—he wasn’t due to have a camera pointed at him for another two days; plenty of time to get his head around his role. And it was imperative he did—it was his biggest and highest profile part to date. If he got this right, it could truly launch his career. Maybe even into Oscar-winning territory.

Taking several deep breaths, he pulled himself up to his full height of 6ft 4” and adopted a haughty, disinterested manner—channelling Mr Darcy, perhaps? Either the one from Pride and Prejudice or Bridget Jones’ Diary would do.

I am William Arthur Stoneydale. And this property is mine.

They’d pretty much been given the run of the house—the real owners having gone to the south of France for the summer—so Theo continued marching around, upstairs and down, pulling in everything he could from his surroundings to make him truly feel like lord of the manor.

Sighing, he ran a hand through his mop of black curls and headed out into the gardens. They were beautiful; all manicured lawns, parterres, rose gardens, arches and perfectly placed shrubs. Despite the perfection, Theo felt more comfortable here—probably because he’d always been an outdoorsy sort, ever since he was a child. Only the strict yet loving influences of his parents had coaxed him inside to do his homework, study for his exams and eventually land himself a place at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, better known as RADA.

The latter had been completely his choice—his mother and father had only wanted him to work hard and do his best. His career options had not been chosen by them, only supported.

Slumping onto a bench, Theo reminded himself of his parents’ wholehearted support and belief. That, and the fact he’d graduated from RADA with a first. Following that, he’d gone from strength to strength.

“Come on, Theo,” he muttered to himself. “You can do this. It’s just another role. A role you can play. Can be.”

His solo pep talk was interrupted by the sound of footsteps crunching on gravel. Then, from behind a line of expertly done topiary appeared a young man, perhaps a few years Theo’s junior.

“Oh,” the other man said, slowing as he spotted Theo, “sorry. Didn’t know anyone would be out here. You’re not filming, are you?” He looked around for cameras. “I was told it wouldn’t be for a few days, give me time to finish—”

Theo cut him off. “Relax, mate, there’s no filming today. Not anywhere. The crew are still setting things up.”

The other man heaved a sigh of relief. “Oh, that’s all right then. Gave me a fright, that did. I need to make sure everything’s spot on in the gardens before they get rolling. So, what’s the star of the show doing out here by himself, anyway?”

Theo gave a wry grin. “Oh, I don’t know about star.”

The man made a scoffing sound. Then, “That’s not what I’ve heard. I’m Eddie, by the way. Eddie Henderson.”

Theo took the hand that was offered, and shook it. “Theodore Samuels. Theo. Nice to meet you.”

“You too. So, you never answered my question. Everything all right?”

“Yeah, I suppose,” Theo said with a shrug. “Just nerves, I think. I’m struggling to get into the right mindset for this character. But I’ve got a couple of days—so I won’t panic just yet. Actually,” he paused as a bright idea illuminated his brain, “could I ask you something?”

Eddie took a seat beside Theo on the bench, and it was only when they were up close and personal that he realised just how handsome the younger man was. He had a lightly-muscled build, ginger hair, a riot of freckles on his face and forearms, blue-green eyes and a slight gap between his two front teeth. Cute and sexy all at once. Christ, he’s going to be trouble.

Snap up a copy at Evernight Publishing, All Romance Ebooks, Amazon US, Amazon UK, and probably lots of other places too, but I'm pretty ill today and I need to go to bed. I'm so rock n' roll, it's crazy. Anyway! I hope you love Lara, Tate, and Zane's story!

We’re ringing in the New Year with lots of giveaways! And by sharing some fun and wacky facts about ourselves. There’s a new giveaway at each stop so be sure to visit them all!
Since I'm a new-ish author (at least under this name), this seems like a good way to meet some new like-minded people! I'm Amber Morgan, and I've got five little-known facts about myself to share, and I'd love to hear something about you too. Let's get to it!

1. I hate being second in the shower. I make a point of always getting up before my fiance so I can use the shower first. I hate it when the bath mat is already wet, when there are damp towels on the rail, when the lid is off the toothpaste (I love him so much, but he never puts the lid back on the toothpaste). All of it just bothers me on a really fundamental level. So no matter how early it means I have to get up, I make sure I'm first in the shower no matter what.

2. I love tea. But loose leaf tea only, please. I literally have a cupboard full. Bags fall out when I open it. I have a tea drawer at work, which is the subject of much wonder and amusement among my work mates. I have a pint-sized travel mug so I can have my first cup of tea of the day on the bus going to work. I have several different tea pots and mesh infusers so that there's always something clean to make tea in. In summary: tea is very important to me. Must be my British heritage.

3. I hate red onion. I don't even like looking at it. Everything about it makes me feel sick.

4. I love crappy TV. Shows like Ancient Aliens, Ghost Adventures, Monster Quest...give it to me. I will watch hours and hours of it quite happily. Wacky pseudo-science documentaries are my comfort food. If I'm home alone, I will marathon this stuff to my heart's content. Honestly, a perfect lazy afternoon for me is a big cup of tea (of course), ten hours of Ancient Aliens, and my cat. Heaven.

5. I hate rom-coms. Maybe that's a dangerous admission for a romance writer, but give me a big, dumb action flick every time. I've yet to see a romantic comedy film that didn't make me want to gouge my own eyes out, and I've tried, okay? I've really tried! (If you have recommendations, feel free to share!).
So that's me! Now it's your turn! I'm giving away a copy of my book, TANNER'S WAR (Wild Blood 1). All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is tell me one thing you really love and one thing you really hate.

Wednesday Snippet - Waking the Lioness

1/6/2016

Well, it's been a while, but since WAKING THE LIONESS is out on Monday, I figured today was a good day to bring back Wednesday Snippets and get your appetite whetted for my sexy shifter story! Head on down for an excerpt...
Picture
And her better-than-human hearing meant she didn’t miss the whispers from the male customers in the bar, even under the smooth soul music pumping through the speakers. Check out the legs on that. Wouldn’t mind taking a ride with her.

Lara flushed as she reached the table of men in question, setting their drinks down. “One Copa Verde, one Bermuda Black, and one Cold Shower,” she announced. “Enjoy, boys.”

The ‛boys’ were men, really, probably fresh from the office and ready to enjoy a wild Friday night. They’d loosened their ties and lost their jackets, and already stank of alcohol. As Lara moved away from the table, one of them slapped her rear—hard.

“Hey, babe, how about a Screaming Orgasm over here?” He leered at her, tone annoyingly assured, as if he was entitled to anything from her.

Lara whirled round to glare at him, a growl working up her throat. “Back off.”

His friends laughed. “Watch it, Greg, she’s got claws!” one crowed, winking at Lara.

They didn’t know the half of it. She started to walk away again, but Greg leapt up, catching her arm and yanking her towards him. “Hey, chill out,” he told her, leaning in way too close. She could smell the nose-wrinkling odor of vodka on his breath, not to mention the distinctive musk of an aroused male. “I’m just being friendly, you know?”

Revolted, she shook him off. “No manhandling the staff, pal, unless you want to be barred.” God, she wished she could shapeshift right now. It would be so satisfying to bite his groping fingers off.

“Come on,” he whined. “Pretty girl like you shouldn’t be so uptight. I bet I could loosen you up…”

Alchemy’s front doors flew open and the cool scent of mountain rain and cats flooded Lara’s senses. She gasped, whirling away from Gropey Greg to see Zane Walker stride through the door.

Oh God. Her knees went weak. He looked just like she remembered—tanned and strong, dark blonde hair ruffled, big hands clenched into bigger fists. His amber eyes widened with surprise, and then narrowed with anger as he scanned the bar and saw her. He stormed towards her, those lush lips she’d never stopped dreaming about pressed together in a thin, angry line.

Ethan watched as she took a deep breath and then looked at him. He wished she didn’t look at him like he was a hungry wolf waiting to devour her. But then, that was a fairly accurate comparison, wasn’t it? He did want to devour her. Every inch of her. Oh, he’d bet she tasted sweeter than any pie.

“So, cinnamon,” she said in a rush. “I know where Sally keeps her spices in the pantry.”

“Tori.” He tasted her name on his lips, but she ignored him, rushing by him and opening the door to the huge walk-in pantry. She flipped the light on and walked to the back of the room. Well, if this was the only chance he had to talk to her alone…

“What are you doing?” She whirled around as he shut the door behind him and leaned against it.

“I want to talk to you.” He wanted more than that, but right now, he would settle for talking.

“About what?” She crossed her arms over her chest. Dammit, she was putting up her shield again, and he wouldn’t let her. He’d seen the way she looked at him through dinner. He knew he wasn’t making it up in his head. It took him only a split second to make a decision.

“About this.” In two steps, he crossed to her and wrapped one arm around her waist, pulling her to him so their lower halves were pressed together. As hard as he was when he was near her, there was no doubt in his mind that she could feel the rigid line of his erection pressed against her.

He knew he was right when her wide green eyes darkened. “Ethan.” Her hands came up to his chest and shoved at him. “What are you doing? Your mother is in the next room.”

Oh, he’d be damned if she was going to shove him away. Clasping her wrists in his strong hands, he backed her up against the wall and pinned her arms above her head.

“I want you, Tori,” he breathed. “If you don’t want me, then tell me now.”

Her breath had quickened, and Ethan could feel the pounding of her heart. “I…” She swiped that tongue over her lips and he had to bite back a groan. “I … uh…” She was staring at his mouth. “What was the question?”

Tightening his grip on her wrists, he knew he couldn’t resist her for one more second. Leaning in, he crushed his mouth to hers, and reveled in the moan that escaped her into his mouth. As her lips parted in an unspoken invitation, his tongue surged, sliding against hers. That torturous tongue of hers danced and played with his.

His natural dominance took over as she softened under him. God, he wanted her. He’d never wanted a woman as much as he wanted her in this instant. He angled his head this way and that, taking her mouth over and over again. When he released her wrists, she wrapped her arms around his neck, her fingers tangling in his hair, lightly tugging. The soft moans she made in the back of her throat flowed into him in an offering.

Welcome to the Year of the Phoenix

1/1/2016

As is now my tradition, I have named the year after a mythological animal. For me, this has become a way of shaping my attitudes and aims for the year ahead.

I started doing this in 2013 (the Year of the Unicorn), because I was in really bad shape mentally, and I needed some magic. Can't think of anything more magical than a unicorn. In that year I opened my perfume shop, Common Brimstone, discovering a new and vital creative outlet for myself. And if you want magic, honestly, there aren't many things more magical I can think of than creating perfumes. It's pure alchemy.

2014 was the Year of the Kraken. I'd lost my confidence in my writing career and abilities over the previous couple of years, and in 2014 I wanted to get it back. It was a year of going balls-to-the-wall, not necessarily to get published, but just to get going again. Remembering that, yeah, this is what I do and I can do it well.

2015 was the Year of the Basilisk. It was about conquering my enemies - in this case, lingering self-doubt and anxiety about myself and my choices. And it was a great year. I got a promotion in my day job. Common Brimstone exceeded my wildest expectations. I signed eight publishing contracts, was in an award-winning anthology, and won my second Evernight Readers' Choice Award. I launched Amber Morgan as a way of stretching my wings and trying out new genres to write in. And Amber is doing pretty nicely.

It wasn't all plain-sailing, but overall, the Year of the Basilisk helped me do exactly what I wanted to do. So now we're in 2016 and it's the Year of the Phoenix, as chosen by my friend and fellow author, Olivia R Burton. I have to say, the phoenix has always been my favourite mythological creature. The idea of this beautiful, magical bird rising from its own ashes has always resonated with me. It's a story about reinvention, rebirth, rebuilding. It's about sweeping away the stuff you don't need and building a new nest for yourself.

I thought a lot about how this might translate for me going into the new year. I think I did the rebirth and rebuilding over the past three years, and what I really want to do this year is just...keep moving forward. Keep writing stories that I love. Keep making perfumes. Keep finding new things to be happy about and grateful for. There are some bad habits to get rid of, and some good habits to instill in myself. Maybe some old habits to bring back. But mostly, it's just going to be about forging ahead. Burning brightly, without burning out.

I hope whatever 2016 brings for you, it's everything you need it to be! Happy New Year!
