I'm almost done with Blood and Bite, and have already picked up book three, Strange Trouble. It's been exactly the right reading material post-The Secret History. Now I just need to decide whether I'm plunging straight into book three or switching genres again...
Last week I finished Donna Tartt's The Secret History, hands down one of the best books I've read in recent years - maybe ever. After getting so emotionally engaged and obsessed with a book, I like to switch genres completely for my next read - like a palate cleanser. So I rummaged through my Kindle (I don't even want to think about the number of unread books on there) until I stumbled across Laken Cane's Blood and Bite, book two of the Rune Alexander series. I read the first book, Shiv Crew, a little while back, and although I thought there were some flaws, I did enjoy it overall. This series appeals to me in the same way LM Pruitt's Jude Magdalyn series does - it's angsty, high drama that doesn't tread the same paths as other urban fantasy series. Yeah, it gets a bit ridiculous in places (seriously, Rune, you can't mock someone for being called Owen Five if you're running around with twins called Levi and Demin), but it's got a fresh feel and is going in cool, unexpected directions. And in a lot of ways, it has the factors that first drew me to urban fantasy - it's a bit grim, very action-packed, and the monsters really are monstrous. Bonus points - Rune seems to learn from her mistakes and faces consequences for her actions!
