Spotlight - Elodie Parkes is Taking Us on An Unusual Vacation!

Please say hello to Elodie Parkes, who's here today with her new release, an erotic romantic suspense (yes! My favourite kind!), AN UNUSUAL VACATION. Take it away, Elodie...
Picture
Hi, thank you for inviting me to your blog to talk about my latest book from Evernight.

An Unusual Vacation October 29 release

I originally expected this story to be a short, but as the plot developed and the characters took over, the story grew and grew, and still there’s more to tell, because one of the supporting characters, Connor, is going to have his own story.

Dominic Carr, my hero and Michelle Vega, my heroine, couldn’t be more different, but they are instantly drawn to each other and the resulting passion between them is intense. Dominic’s hopes are high, making him vulnerable. Michelle is involved in a dangerous lifestyle far removed from Dominic’s, but she’s lonely. This opens her up to taking chances when she meets Dominic.

I love water, rivers, and the ocean. They have their own very special atmosphere, and I wanted to flavor the story setting with the sounds, and smells of sun drenched harbor towns, wide rivers and boats, to provide contrast with the suspense element of the story.

When you read the story and Dominic sails away on vacation, think Monterey or the marinas in the Caribbean or the Florida keys. The sky is Grecian blue, the air and water sparkles. There’s the smell of salt and sea, and wheel of seagulls as the couple walk on the quay together.
Picture
At thirty-two Dominic Carr thinks it’s time he met a girl he could love. He’s tired and jaded from his high power job, and hoping that this summer’s vacation will be refreshing. When he sees Michelle Vega in the art gallery of a harbor town he visits, her long legs in pink couture shorts grab his attention.

Michelle Vega has everything to hide except her beauty and her instant attraction to Dominic. She’s not on vacation as she visits the gallery—more like on business.

As the two of them fall into a hot romance, Dominic is sure Michelle could be ‘the one,’ but Michelle is filled with doubt when she considers how he might react to discovering her secrets.

When Michelle’s business takes a dangerous twist Dominic finds he’s pulled into a perilous situation.

Will this be a test of his love or the finish of it?

Read an excerpt: Dominic sees Michelle for the first time

A sunbeam slanted through the skylight as if aiming for Dominic’s face. He opened his eyes and rolled away from the bright shaft of light. His head safely on the other side of the pillow, Dominic checked the time on his cell phone that lay on the bedside unit. The day looked beautiful through the cabin window as he sat up and swung his legs onto the floor. He pulled on a T-shirt over his boxers and padded into the galley to make coffee. Dominic went up on deck and took his cup of coffee with him. The clear, blue sky and the sun-dappled water brought a smile to his face. The marina around his berth was already full of life, and he sat to watch a fabulous motor yacht edge out of a berth and move majestically into deeper water. Hunger drove him to shower and dress. He had food in the fridge to cook, but Dominic knew there was a great café in this town next to an art gallery and he meant to visit both that morning.

Mellowed by the blueberry pancakes he’d eaten, the sun on his shoulders as he sat at one of the café’s outdoor tables lifted his spirits. Summer scented the air and Dominic took a deep breath. I needed this change. It feels as if I’ve suddenly entered the real world…

His thoughts made him grin as he paid the bill, and left the café. The art gallery, a door down, was showing several local artists’ work and the traveling exhibition on loan from a private collector housed a number of Monet paintings Dominic wanted to see. He’d never thought about joining the art world himself, but Dominic liked to look. It gave him a sense of peace.

A poster on the revolving door proclaimed there was a small fee that week because of the Monets. The gallery had two floors. The rooms were long, stretching back in the deceptively spacious building, with padded benches placed at intervals for people to sit and absorb the art. Dominic donated at the plastic box attached to the screen midway down the first floor of the gallery designating the entrance to the special exhibition. He wanted to see that first.

Over an hour later, Dominic left the Monet exhibition, and wandered along to the top room of the art gallery. He saw the young woman the moment he reached the top of the stairs. She sat part way down the left hand side, on one of the blue benches. Dominic couldn’t tear his gaze away as he edged closer to where she sat. She wore a pale-pink suit jacket and her glossy hair fell down her back, almost to her waist. Her lightly tanned legs were bare and she wore bright pink, high-heeled pumps. Dominic couldn’t see a skirt. Intrigued, he stopped at the painting adjacent to the one she sat in front of, and cast a secret glance at her. Shorts, mmm, she’s beautiful. He passed behind the bench trying to ascertain if she wore a wedding ring. Luck gave him a perfect opportunity as she moved her hair from her face, giving him a delightful view of a naked wedding band finger and her lovely profile. Dominic’s heart raced. Surprise at his reaction to the young woman gripped him, and he walked rapidly across the width of the gallery to stand before an ocean scene and try to collect his swirling thoughts.

About Elodie

I’m a writer who is in love with happy endings. Currently based in the UK but thinking about joining the next flock of birds I see heading south for the winter.

I love: music, art, flowers, trees, the ocean ...

I work with antiques by day and words by night.

Like a vampire, darkness is my friend, that’s when the silence is only broken by an occasional hoot of owls in the woodlands opposite my current home, and I write.

Wednesday Snippet!

11/11/2015

So yesterday I wrote "the end" on my Naomi Clark WIP, Dark Days, which means today I go back to work on Wolf's Hunt! It's been about two months since I last did any work on this story, so I'm going to re-read everything first and remind myself what's what, and then it's back to work with a vengeance. I would love to get this story wrapped up and submitted before the end of this year.

I thought I'd share a little teaser from early on for my Wednesday Snippet...And I figured a nice picture would be good too, so...enjoy!

You could get a lot of things at the Wild Blood MC clubhouse. Booze, pussy, pot...It was one of the things Wolf most appreciated about the place. One thing you couldn't get was privacy. Everyone knew everyone's fucking business, or thought they did. So as much as he wanted to head back there to call Grim, and even though the converted mill was closer than his own place, he ignored the instinct. He hopped on his Ducati and sped back to his own apartment, nerves screaming the whole damn way.

He lived over the auto shop that he managed, one of the club's businesses around Warren's Mill. The apartment was a dive, but Wolf didn't care. He rarely slept there. It was pretty much just a place to keep his few possessions. He hadn't been home in a few days and the smell that hit him when he unlocked the door told him so. Stale beer and leftover Chinese takeout – the cologne of the single biker.

He didn't give a shit. He slammed the door shut and pulled his phone out, redialling Grim. He paced restlessly as he waited for the other guy to pick up, kicking aside piles of unwashed t-shirts and grease-stained jeans. His mind and his heart raced, a thousand memories assailing him and colliding with a thousand possibilites. None of them were pretty. He'd left a huge fucking mess behind in New Orleans three years ago. He'd always figured it would catch up to him one day.

"Wolf?" Grim picked up after what felt like a fucking age. "Got that whiskey on hand?"

"Don't be an asshole, man. Just talk. You found Adele? Where? Tell me everything."

"Yeah, I found Adele." Grim fell silent for a long, agonising moment. "But you oughta know, Danny Boy, Esther is dead."

His words didn't make any sense. For a second, Wolf was sure he'd mishead, or that Grim was going to burst into his raucous laughter and bellow gotcha! Because it didn't make any fucking sense. How could Esther be dead?

He sat down on the threadbare sofa, pressing his hand to his forehead. "What?"

"I don't know how else to tell ya, bro. Wish I could break to ya gently, but it ain't gentle. She's dead. She killed herself. I'm sorry, Danny."

Wolf couldn't answer. A cold, numbing sensation spread through his chest, up into his throat. The mother of his child...dead? Gone? "Adele?" he managed to ask.

Grim was silent even longer now. "With Clea."

"Oh, fuck me sideways." Wolf groaned.

"That's not the worst part," Grim said.

"You gotta be kidding me. What's worse?"

"Clea's shacked up with Shango."

Wolf's head spun. He wished he'd taken Grim's advice and grabbed some whiskey. The flare of possessive rage Grim's words lit in him was almost painful.

Far from Blind Excerpt

He closed the door behind them and the distinct click of a lock tumbling over echoed around the room. Maybe no showing yesterday was a mistake. If they’d had any chance at all, she’d blown it for sure. How could she expect him to trust her now? The air, thick with unsaid words, closed in around her.

It was time to take care of business and escape before she embarrassed herself. “This must be for you.” She held out the envelope.

“Thank you.” He took it from her and tore it open, revealing a piece of paper. His cheeks pulled into a little smile, then it disappeared. He maneuvered around his desk and sat. “Do you like me, Candy?”

“Of course I do.” She clasped her arms around her middle. The bigger question is what he thought of her before Club Blind and now.

“Then why didn’t you show last night?” He pressed his lips together and kept his gaze on her.

“To be honest…”

“That’s all I’ll ever expect from you.”

“I’ll give it to you straight. You don’t want a girl like me.” She blew out a breath as if it could help her raging pulse. Never in a million years would she have guessed she’d want a man to tell her she was wrong.

“Is that what you believe?”

“Yes.” She kept her focus on him. He gave nothing away. His expression didn’t change, only his fingers tapped on his desk which was irritatingly neat.

“Then we have a problem.” He stood. “We’d agreed to meet. I kept up my end.”

“And I didn’t.” She blew out a deep breath.

“Come here.”

She didn’t move. She didn’t take her next breath either.

He pointed to the ground in front of him. “Don’t make me ask twice.”

She jumped and then slipped around his desk. Damn, he really did smell good. No matter whether it was aftershave or him, the deep woodsy scent turned here on. Everything about Brad turned her on.

“Did I ask you to join me at Mistress Charlie’s yesterday?”

“Yes, but—”

“Do you believe I’m a liar?”

“No.”

“I don’t think you are either.” He tapped under her chin, lifting her focus back to him. “But I don’t believe you’re being honest with me right now and that’s a problem.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t show yesterday.”

“I appreciate the admission, but I can’t let the action and the attitude go unpunished.”

“What, are you going to spank me?” She chuckled.

“I think it’s time.” He tucked some of her hair behind her ear and his touch lingered along the side of her neck over her ugly mole. “Don’t you agree?”

“Agreed, Sir.” She leaned back on his desk. It was the only thing holding her up.

“Safeword?”

“Red.”

“Very good. Bend over my desk, please.”

“Right here?” She looked around his office. She didn’t find any windows to the hall, but his windows facing the next building were wide open. “You really are pissed.”

The corner of his lips lifted slightly. “The windows are treated. No one can see in here.”

“Oh.”

“You’re stalling.”

“Can you blame me?”

“You do know I’m an accountant, right?” He tugged on her hair. “We like to add.”

Welcome to Anti-Nano!

11/2/2015

Good luck to everyone who started NaNoWriMo yesterday! May your words come swiftly and your...blockages...be few? Your writing blockages. All blockages.

I am not doing NaNo, because I know I can't commit to the minimum daily word count due to my shoulder/arm problems/perfume business/day job/inherent laziness/old episodes of Raw is War/delete as appropriate. But I love the spirit of NaNo, so I always aim to commit to something writing-wise in November, and thus, Anti-Nano was born.

The principles of Anti-Nano are simple: pick your goal and hop to it. Whether it's to write a certain amount each day, finish that story you've been avoiding for months, or brainstorm ideas for your epic, game-changing ten book series, you set the goals and pace yourself accordingly. My usual Anti-Nano goal is just "write something every day," but I'm adjusting that slightly this year and giving myself two goals.

1. Finish the first draft of Dark Days, my current Naomi Clark wip. I'm so close! The end is definitely in sight, and I feel like I can by done by mid-November if I stick to my current pace.

2. Once Dark Days is wrapped up and has been sent to my brave volunteer beta reader, I'm going to work on my next Wild Blood MC title, Wolf's Hunt. It's not impossible that I could finish that before the end of November, but I'm not aiming for that particularly. I just want to crack on as much as I can before the end of this year.

My caveat is that I have two short stories scheduled for release in the next couple of months, so I'm awaiting edits which, obviously, take precedence. So my goals may jump around a bit depending on when the edits arrive and how intense they are.

I post check-ins on Mondays and Fridays, and snippets on Wednesdays (if I can find non-spoilery snippets for Dark Days this late in the game). Hopefully this will be a productive, creative month for everyone!
